Home Depot Open Box Appliances and Deals: Where to Look, What They Cost

Home Depot Open Box Appliances and Deals: Where to Look, What They Cost

Where to Find Open Box Appliances at Home Depot

Open box appliances are an in-store thing. Every full-size Home Depot has some, and the appliance department is the largest source of open box discounts in the building. Most stores keep them in one of three places:

  • Along the back wall of the appliance department, often behind the main refrigerator row.
  • A corner near the appliance desk, where returns are staged after inspection.
  • An endcap or clearance bay near the seasonal section during big appliance sales, when the department needs floor space.

Look for a yellow markdown sticker with the original price crossed out. If you see none, ask the appliance associate: returned units can sit in the back for a day or two before they are tagged, and the associate knows what is coming out.

Homedepot.com lists only a handful of open box units and does not say which store a unit is in. No tool tracks open box units online, ours included, because each one is a single returned box with its own tag. The way to find them is to walk the department.

What Appliances Cost in Store Right Now

What we can measure is the price the same appliances already carry on the shelf, store by store. An open box tag should beat these, or it is not a deal. Prices below are from our scans of Home Depot stores on October 26, 2026, counting only stores with the item in stock for pickup.

On sale at most stores (boxed, new):

ApplianceStore priceWasStores
Vissani 18.7 cu. ft. bottom freezer refrigerator$649$7991,000+
Vissani 18.1 cu. ft. top freezer refrigerator$549$6991,000+
Vissani 14.2 cu. ft. top freezer refrigerator$449$5491,000+
Frigidaire 7.5 cu. ft. mini refrigerator with top freezer$299$3991,000+
Vissani 7 cu. ft. chest freezer$199$2491,000+
Realtree 7 cu. ft. chest freezer$229-$269$32952

On clearance at a few stores:

ApplianceClearance priceWasStores
Vissani 1.5 cu. ft. air fry convection microwave$90-$132$179294
Samsung 1.9 cu. ft. countertop microwave$159$3194
BLACK+DECKER 0.9 cu. ft. microwave$43-$45$896
Galanz 7.6 cu. ft. retro top freezer refrigerator$225$5001
Vissani 10.1 cu. ft. top freezer refrigerator$95$4291

Two things stand out. The appliances Home Depot stocks on the floor are mostly compact, garage-ready and top-freezer models; big French door and side-by-side units ship from a warehouse, so they reach the store floor mainly as returns and refused deliveries. That is why the open box area is where large refrigerators show up cheap. And deep appliance clearance is rare and store-specific: one store had the Vissani 10.1 cu. ft. top freezer at $95 (was $429), and no other store we scanned had it on clearance for pickup.

You can see which appliance models are on clearance near you in the Home Depot clearance feed, then check the open box area for a unit of the same model.

What Open Box Appliances Usually Cost

Open box discounts are set by the store and depend on condition, not category. These are typical tag ranges reported by shoppers and staff, not figures we measure:

ConditionTypical discountWhat it usually is
Opened box, no visible damage10-20% offRefused delivery, wrong size, changed mind
Minor cosmetic marks15-30% offScuffed side panel, small ding on a back corner
Visible scratch or dent30-50% offDented door, scratched top, damaged handle
Floor model or display20-40% offNever hooked up, plenty of fingerprints

Refrigerators and ranges get the deepest cuts because they are bulky to store and expensive to move again. Dishwashers and over-the-range microwaves get smaller cuts because the store can stack them and wait.

Open box prices are not system-set the way clearance is. If the unit has damage the sticker does not account for, ask the department manager. An extra 10% is common on appliances that have sat for more than a couple of weeks.

The 48-Hour Rule for Major Appliances

Home Depot’s return policy for major appliances (refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges, dishwashers, cooktops, wall ovens and range hoods) requires you to report damage or defects within 48 hours of delivery or pickup. After that, problems go through the manufacturer warranty, not a store return.

For an open box unit that means:

  1. Inspect it in the store before you pay. Open every door and drawer, check the back for crushed coils or a bent compressor housing, and look inside the drum or tub.
  2. Photograph every mark before it leaves the store, next to the tag.
  3. Plug it in or run a cycle within a day. A refrigerator should be cold in a few hours. A washer should fill, agitate and drain.
  4. Call the store, not the manufacturer, inside 48 hours if something is wrong. That is the window where an exchange or refund is simple.

Small appliances that do not need delivery follow the standard 90-day return policy, open box or not.

Open Box Refrigerators: What to Check

Refrigerators are the most common open box appliance and the one with the most expensive failure, so check them hardest:

  • Door alignment. Doors that sit uneven or do not seal were probably dropped.
  • Ice maker and water dispenser. Parts present, lines not kinked behind the unit.
  • Back panel and coils. Crushed coil fins or a dented compressor cover are a bigger risk than a scratched door.
  • Shelves and bins. Missing bins cost $40 to $120 each to replace and are rarely discounted on the tag.
  • Compressor sound. If the store lets you plug it in, a loud hum or rattle within a few minutes means walk away.

Refrigerators refused at delivery for a cosmetic dent are the best buys in the department: never used, and the dent is usually on a side or the back that faces a wall.

Warranty, Delivery and Install Parts

The manufacturer warranty on an open box appliance runs from your purchase date. Keep the receipt and register the unit with the manufacturer using the model and serial number from the rating plate. Home Depot Protection Plans can be added at checkout the same way as on new units; on a 40%-off scratch-and-dent refrigerator, the plan often costs less than you saved.

Open box appliances get the same delivery, haul-away and installation options as new ones. Units already in the building often deliver within a couple of days. Returned units are often missing the water line, dryer cord or dishwasher install kit, so ask what is included and buy the missing kit at the same time.

When Open Box Appliance Stock Is Highest

  • The two weeks after a major appliance sale. Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day and Black Friday events generate a wave of deliveries, and some come back as refusals or wrong-size returns. Late September and early December are strong for this reason.
  • Model-year changes. When lineups refresh, stores clear display and returned units of the outgoing model. An open box discount on top of a discontinued-model clearance price is how appliances reach 60% off.

Open box appliances are rarely re-marked more than once. If the unit you want is priced above the ranges here, ask for the adjustment instead of waiting.

Open Box Beyond Appliances

Open box at Home Depot means a product returned by a customer, opened for display, or with damaged packaging. It is usually unused, which makes it different from refurbished (repaired and tested by the manufacturer). Outside appliances, look here:

  • Tool corral: a cage or shelf near the front or the tool department with returned tools, combo kits and accessories. Typically 10-25% off, more if clearly used.
  • Department endcaps: open box items with a clearance or open box tag in their own aisle.
  • Overhead storage: large open box vanities, cabinets and fixtures are often stored above the sales floor. If you see a tag but no product, ask an associate to check overhead.
  • Lighting: display chandeliers and fixtures, often 20-40% off.
  • Bath: faucets, shower heads and vanities returned after remodels, often 15-35% off.
  • Outdoor: grills and mowers at the end of the season, often 20-40% off.

Power tool combo kits are a strong category: buyers return a kit after realizing they needed only one or two tools, and the kit is usually complete. Ceiling fans and light fixtures come back often because the style or size did not suit the room.

If an open box item does not sell, it enters the regular clearance markdown cycle and can drop further. See how Home Depot markdowns work.

Open Box vs Clearance vs Floor Model

Track the clearance side by store. Endless follows clearance prices at your local Home Depot stores, including appliances.

Get started

Open box: returned or opened, new or like-new, accessories usually included, 10-40% off by condition, standard return policy.

Clearance: new, sealed, discontinued or overstocked, full manufacturer warranty, from 25% off down to penny, priced store by store and cut in stages. The same SKU can be clearance at many stores at once.

Floor model or display: used as a store display, may show wear or miss accessories, often 30-60% off, frequently sold as-is.

What to Check Before Buying Any Open Box Item

  • All parts, hardware bags and accessories are present (check the parts list on the box or manual).
  • No damage to the product itself.
  • Remotes, power cords and cables for anything electronic.
  • Ask to plug in or test power tools and small appliances before paying.
  • Compare the open box price with the current shelf price in the Home Depot app. Sometimes the open box discount is smaller than a sale already running.

Tool brands like DeWalt, Milwaukee and Makita generally honor warranties on open box tools with proof of purchase. See the DeWalt clearance guide.

Getting a Better Price

Ask. Open box pricing has room that system-set clearance does not, especially on appliances and large items with damage the tag ignores.

Combine with promotions. Some coupons and promotions apply to open box items. Not guaranteed, but worth asking.

Wait, if you can. Items that do not sell enter clearance. Store-wide clearance pushes often come at quarter ends and seasonal changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Home Depot have open box appliances?

Yes. Every full-size store sells open box appliances, usually along the back wall or near the desk of the appliance department. Online selection is minimal.

How much are open box appliances at Home Depot?

Tags usually read 10-30% off for opened-box units in good condition and 30-50% off for scratch-and-dent refrigerators, ranges and washers. Compare against the shelf price first: on October 26, 2026, Home Depot’s in-stock refrigerators were already $449 to $649 on sale at over 1,000 stores.

Does Home Depot sell open box items online?

Very rarely. A handful of open box appliances appear on homedepot.com, a fraction of what stores have on the floor.

Can you return an open box appliance to Home Depot?

Yes, under the major appliance rule: report damage or defects within 48 hours of delivery or pickup. After that, the manufacturer warranty applies. Small appliances get the standard 90 days.

Do open box items come with a warranty?

Usually yes. The manufacturer warranty starts on your purchase date. Keep the Home Depot receipt as proof.

Are open box items a better deal than waiting for clearance?

Open box is available now at a moderate discount. Clearance can go deeper, but there is no guarantee a given model will reach it, and waiting risks someone else buying the unit.

How often does Home Depot get new open box items?

Daily, as customers make returns. Appliance open box stock is highest in the two weeks after a major appliance sale.
